Abstract:
The aim of the study is to explore the ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) knowledge of middle and senior managers in upscale hotels in Hungary and to examine the extent to which they have developed sustainability policies. The importance of ESG-based operations is gaining increasing attention in the hotel sector due to the industry’s significant resource demands and environmental and social impacts.
The research employs a questionnaire survey to gather insights from middle and senior managers of four- and five-star hotels in Hungary regarding their ESG knowledge and perceptions. The findings indicate that the majority of managers are familiar with ESG principles, but there are notable gaps in the practical implementation of this knowledge.
The primary challenges identified are compliance with new regulations and the transition to sustainable energy, with managers acknowledging the need to enhance their ESG knowledge in these areas. The study also reveals that managers consider training and the exchange of practical experiences to be the most effective methods for increasing ESG expertise. Furthermore, the primary motivation for adopting ESG practices is perceived to be the improvement of brand reputation.
