Abstract: The anticipated proliferation of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV), which establish data connectivity with each other and urban infrastructure, is expected to offer opportunities for addressing current urban mobility issues such as congestion, noise, and CO2 emissions. However, it also entails significant uncertainties and unresolved questions. This requires extraordinary preparations, measures, and resources from cities that go beyond the existing framework of urban development.

The aim of our theoretical exploratory study is to understand the key urban development challenges related to the integration of CAVs, which communicate with each other and urban infrastructure, into the current urban fabric. Additionally, we seek to provide new research and discussion opportunities for theoretical and practical professionals engaged in urban development.
